Treating Scoliosis with Anterior Scoliosis Correction in New York

Treating Scoliosis with Anterior Scoliosis Correction in New York

Most cases of scoliosis can be treated with non-surgical methods.  But treating scoliosis with anterior scoliosis correction is the technique in play when the thoracolumbar (immediately below the thoracic, in the lower mid-back) vertebrae are involved.

Also called VBT (vertebral body tethering), this intervention answers the need for curvature mitigation and takes advantage of future growth to support further curve correction.  For this reason, the anterior method is generally used to treat growing young people, 10 years of age or over. Curvatures of between 30 and 70 percent can be addressed using this method.

Also employed for those who have reached full growth potential, but hope to avoid traditional fusion, anterior scoliosis correction has been successfully used for many scoliosis patients.

Greater mobility.

This intervention offers access to the vertebrae through the front of the spine, generating far less trauma for the muscles.

The incision is made on the side of the chest or abdomen, rather than the front, as suggested by the name of the therapy.  With this response, surgeons can offer patients greater mobility following surgery.

How it works.

Widely regarded as a superior response to scoliosis than traditional fusion, treating scoliosis with anterior scoliosis correction serves to correct irregular bone growth.  When scoliosis is present, the curvature caused by the condition places undue stress on the bones involved.

When vertebrae are under stress, interior bone mass grows more slowly than exterior bone mass.  Over time, this causes bone deformity, which in turn causes dysfunction.

By correcting the secondary physical reaction to the curvature, the uneven loading of the bones resulting from different rates of bone growth can be corrected.

Titanium pedicle screws are implanted on affected vertebrae (those responsible for the curvature).  A flexible surgical cord is then run through them.  The cord is tightened by the surgeon, which has the immediate effect of straightening the curvature.

Mitigation of the spinal curve occurs instantaneously.  This improvement continues over time, using scoliosis treatment with anterior scoliosis correction.
