Bloodless Surgical Program

Our operative team strives to minimize blood loss and the need for transfusion during surgery. This is done for each and every patient. Many patients come to Dr. Lonner for surgical treatment because of his meticulous attention to detail and ability to minimize bleeding and speed the healing process for his patients by delicate handling of the patient’s tissues during their operation. Many Jehovah’s Witnesses have sought Dr. Lonner’s expertise in order to have bloodless surgery. This refers to an operation in which blood transfusions are not given for religious reasons.

Regardless of one’s religion, Dr. Lonner and his team will do their best to avoid blood transfusions for you and/or your family member. Extensive bleeding and transfusions are associated with higher infection rates and other complications, so this is a major priority.

Blood loss is limited in the following way:

  1. Meticulous operating technique
  2. Controlled blood pressure
  3. Two-surgeon teams
  4. Use of Transexamic acid, a medication that limits bleeding. Dr. Lonner and his team has been awarded for his research into the use of this drug
  5. Use of specialized cauterizing tools and hemostatic agents (materials that decrease bleeding)

Patient Story

This is a 14-year-old girl who came to see Dr. Lonner for progressive, severe scoliosis. She enjoys dancing and does it several days a week. Dr. Lonner and his team performed a meticulous corrective surgery that included a VATS procedure through her right side and posterior corrective surgery. Mackenzie did beautifully, lost minimal amounts of blood and did not require blood transfusion.
