Prevention and Treatment for Adolescent Scoliosis in Florida

Every day, we find out more about adolescent scoliosis.  With young people older than age 10 being the primary demographic affected by this deformity of the spine, the research and development community is always working to find new and effective ways to treat it.

Study

The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s study has revealed that Vitamin D and calcium can stop curve progression in girls between ages 11 and 14 and presenting a Cobb angle of 15%.

The study implicated 330 participants, divided into 3 groups.  The 3 groups were given:

  • a low dose of Vitamin D, with calcium
  • a high dose of Vitamin D, with calcium
  • placebo

Enduring for 2 years, the Hong Kong study returned results showing significant evidence of greatly improved bone health in the 2 groups taking the supplements.

And so, supplements would seem to be a new frontier in inhibiting the progression of scoliosis curvatures.  This offers immense hope, not just for patients, but for the physicians who treat them.

The use of dietary supplements and the assembly of personalized nutritional plans represent new approaches to scoliosis treatment.

Traditional Methods

Prevention and treatment for adolescent scoliosis in Florida are the focus of our practice, here at Scoliosis & Spine Associates.  And as we look forward to more research into the efficacy of supplements, we’re still developing traditional methods to offer patients higher efficacy and comfort with these treatment models.

While surgery is always possible, it’s a last resort, except in the most severe cases.  For younger patients, conservative approaches are preferred, giving us several options, from observation to bracing to exercise therapies like Yoga, Pilates and the Scroth Method.

We find that a combination of exercise therapy and bracing can be highly effective to restrict curve progression and to empower and strengthen the patient.

Every Patient Is Unique

Getting ahead of the curve is about sourcing the right therapeutic strategy for the individual patient.  With up-to-date information about prevention and treatment in hand, physicians are now empowered to add supplements to their treatment plans.

Prevention and treatment of adolescent scoliosis in Florida is changing and Scoliosis & Spine Associates welcomes this innovation in the sector.  We’re actively engaged in research into and development of preventative therapies and treatments.  Evolving knowledges makes a difference, improving outcomes for our patients.

That’s a new dawn for adolescents with scoliosis, offering tremendous hope!
