Prevention and Treatment for Adolescent Scoliosis in Illinois

Every day, new research emerges about adolescent scoliosis.  With young people over the age of 10 the primary demographic affected by this condition of the spine, the research and development community is seeking new ways of approaching its treatment – even its prevention.

Hong Kong Study

The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s study has indicated that combining Vitamin D with calcium can stem curve progression in girls aged between 11 and 14 and having a Cobb angle of 15%.

The study followed 330 participants, distributed into 3 groups.  The 3 groups implicated were given:

  • a low dose of Vitamin D, combined with calcium
  • a high dose of Vitamin D, combined with calcium
  • placebo

Enduring for 2 years, the Hong Kong study returned results showing material evidence for improved bone health in the 2 groups receiving supplements.

And so, supplements appear to be a new frontier in halting the progression of scoliosis curvatures.  This offers great hope, not just for patients, but for the physicians who treat them.

And it’s true that the deployment of supplements and the application of nutritional plans are a new frontier in scoliosis treatment.

Traditional Treatment

Prevention and treatment for adolescent scoliosis in Illinois are at the heart of our practice here at Scoliosis and Spine.  As we wait for further research into the role of supplements, we continue to develop traditional treatments to offer greater efficacy and comfort for our young patients.

Surgery is always a last resort (except in the most extreme cases).  For younger patients, conservative approaches are always preferred, giving us a range of options from observation, to bracing to movement therapies, like Pilates, Yoga and Scroth Method.

It’s often the case that a combination of movement therapy and bracing is applied to restrict curve progression and to strengthen and empower the patient.

Every Patient Is Different

Getting ahead of the curve is about finding the way forward for the individual patient.  With the new information about prevention and treatment in hand, physicians are encouraged to add supplements to their therapeutic responses.

Prevention and treatment of adolescent scoliosis in Illinois is evolving and Scoliosis & Spine Associates is in the vanguard of that evolution.  We actively participate in research into and development of preventative treatments and therapies which make a difference in the prognosis of our patients.

That’s hope for adolescents with scoliosis and we’re all about hope!
