Every day brings new horizons in scoliosis treatment. With children older than age 10 being the top demographic impacted by scoliosis, the research and development community is always hard at work to discover new and effective ways of treating it.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s study has revealed a link between Vitamin D and calcium supplements and halting curve progression in girls between ages 11 and 14 and presenting a 15% Cobb angle.
The study implicated 330 participants, divided into 3 groups. These 3 groups were treated with:
- a low dose of Vitamin D, with calcium
- a high dose of Vitamin D, with calcium
After 2 years, the Hong Kong study’s results showed compelling evidence of drastically improved bone health in the 2 groups taking the supplements.
So, supplements are promising a new way of stopping the progression of scoliosis curves. This offers great hope, not only for patients, but for the doctors who treat them.
The employment of dietary supplements like Vitamin D and calcium and the creation of doctor-directed nutritional plans represent progress in the treatment of scoliosis.
Prevention and treatment for adolescent scoliosis in Texas are at the center of our practice at Scoliosis & Spine Associates. As we wait for further research into the efficacy of supplements, we continue to be engaged in developing existing models for patients of these traditional therapies.
While surgery is always a potentiality it’s a last resort, except in the gravest cases. For younger patients, conservative treatments are usually chosen, giving us a variety of options, from observation to bracing to movement therapies like Yoga, the Scroth Method and Pilates.
We find that marrying therapeutic movement to bracing is a highly effective strategy for slowing or stopping curve progression, strengthening and empowering the patient.
Getting ahead of the curve is about choosing the right treatment plan for the individual patient. With leading-edge information about prevention and treatment in hand, physicians are now empowered to add supplements to their arsenal of therapeutic responses.
Prevention and treatment of adolescent scoliosis in Texas is moving forward apace and Scoliosis & Spine Associates welcomes this continuing innovation in the sector. We’re professionally invested in research into and development of preventative treatments for scoliosis. Emerging knowledge makes a difference, improving life and outcomes for patients.
It’s all great news for adolescents with scoliosis!
